National Marriage Day was held on 13 August 2013. This day marks the anniversary of the passing of the Marriage Amendment Act 2004 which defined marriage as a “union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life”.

Over the past two weeks people have gathered all around the country, in cities and in country towns, to draw attention to the need for our legislators to defend the institution of marriage and retain this definition in the Marriage Act.

On Saturday 24 August a group of these people will gather in Manly, to ask Mr Abbott to “hold the line on marriage”.

The coordinator of the Rally, Mrs Mary-Louise Fowler said “Australia wants a Prime Minister who supports natural marriage, because every child is born a man and a woman, and every child has a right to know and be raised by their own mother and father wherever possible.

“Australians will not be silent while legislators attempt to play around with the very make up of the family, listening, not to the silent majority, but to a small minority who seek to overturn not just a natural reality, but hundreds of years of legal precedence.

“We will be asking Mr Abbott and the Coalition to give us an assurance that if there is a change of government on 7 September they will hold the line on marriage”.

Gerard Calilhanna of the National Marriage Coalition stated, “Mr Rudd has betrayed the families of Australia with his declared intention to bring forward a Bill to suppress marriage and replace it with homosexual ‘marriage’ within the first 100 days of a re-elected Labor Government. We call upon the ALP to reverse its anti-marriage policy at the next National Conference and for the Coalition to continue to support marriage, rejecting moves to a conscience vote. Our children deserve better.”
