Raising funds for Mercy Ships women's health projects

Mercy Ships provides free corrective surgery to some of the estimated 2 million mothers who suffer from obstetric fistulas, and it is our goal to reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistulas among the women of Africa by providing specialised surgical treatments, training and awareness.
This is why, on Monday 12 May, we are asking you to help us fundraise and raise awareness of women’s health issues in West and Central Africa by registering for Mercy Monday in May and hosting a morning tea, lunch or dinner.

How you can help

Helping is easier than you think. You can organise a social event of any size - a morning tea, lunch or dinner - and invite your friends/family/classmates/co-workers along. Hold your event in your home, at your workplace or with your local community group. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
Your event doesn’t need to be held precisely on the 12th of May, just some time in the vicinity. We will provide you with everything else you need to host an event, such as invitations, a DVD, brochures and other materials to help make your Mercy Monday in May event a great success.

To register your interest in hosting an event, click here, or call us on 1300 739 899 before 31 March. All we need is your name and full contact details (including mailing address).

Once you register, we’ll be in touch to provide more information. Then brainstorm with family or friends on what you can to do to raise funds to promote better health care for women in West and Central Africa.

Why May 12?

May 12 coincides with three very important events that highlight the work of three groups that are critical to the ongoing work of Mercy Ships:
1. International Nurses Day on Monday 12 May acknowledges the dedication, compassion and wonderful care provided by all nurses. In particular, we pay tribute to our Mercy Ships nurses!
2. Mother’s Day on Sunday 11 May. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to thank and celebrate our mums, and a time to spare a thought for the less fortunate mothers of Africa.
3. National Volunteer Week, running from 12 - 18 May, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary and the power of volunteering. Mercy Ships are almost entirely staffed by volunteers from over 40 nations and it is this dynamic that allows Mercy Ships to provide the medical care and development assistance free of charge to the poorest of the poor.

Your support saves lives

At fifteen years of age, Nana was given in marriage and pregnancy soon followed. After counting nine full moons, Nana prepared herself to give birth but the baby did not come. After three days of medical care in a local hospital, the now lifeless baby was delivered. Nana was left with an obstetric fistula and, as a consequence, her husband left her.
Seven years after her childbirth injury, Nana moved to Conakry, Guinea to access the surgery she had heard about for women with her condition. While Nana’s two surgeries at the big hospital in Conakry failed, her life took an unexpected turn for the better. “Three years and four months ago, I met Djibril. He decided that he loved me, and he set about winning my heart," Nana recalls. Then, in 2013, Nana experienced what she calls an incredible blessing. Her husband was watching television and learnt of Mercy Ships and its big white hospital ship.
Nana came to the Mercy Ships screening with a group of friends, and her faithfulness bore fruit. The skillful hand of Australian surgeon Dr. Judith Goh and the intense prayers of everyone around her resulted in a successful fistula repair. After a two-week healing period, Nana was finally healed.
If you're unable to host a Mercy Monday in May event but would still like to help Mercy Ships continue this vital work, donate to the annual Mercy Ships Australia Fistula Appeal. A gift of just $25 will support a female patient on board the Africa Mercy for a day.
