Christians from many different backgrounds will gather on the steps of Adelaide’s Parliament House from 11.30 am – 1 pm on Saturday (23 August), to pray for divine intervention in Iraq.

Rally organiser Pastor Cathryn Crosby-Wright said: “We are shocked at the mass murder by beheading of men and children, burying children alive, crucifixions, firing squads and untold cruelty to women and forced conversions.

“We are alarmed at the inability of civilised governments to control the situation.  We see that an appeal to God is an important first step for drastic action.”

The rally has been organised following an outpouring of concern – heightened even more by today’s news of the brutal beheading of a US journalist.
One of the rally speakers, Father Seraphim of Adelaide’s Coptic Orthodox Church , is particularly concerned as his people in the Middle East have become targets for radical Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic State (IS).

Father Seraphim quoted the Australian Coptic leader Bishop Suriel, who said: "The ruthless and purposeful savagery of the attacks by the fundamentalist Muslim terrorist organisation The Islamic State is truly inconceivable.  Yet most world leaders remain silent in the face of the murder of innocent children and horrific beheadings of civilians.”
