Seaside Church and school in Vanuatu, on Saturday, 13th June at 7:30pm at Wesley
Uniting Church, 32 Showground Rd, Castle Hill, Sydney. Gareth McCray will be Master of
Ceremonies.
The
ticket price of $25 will include a gourmet supper!
In 2009,
a delegation from Wesley Castle Hill Uniting Church travelled to Vanuatu and
established a relationship with Paama Seaside Church in Port Vila,
Vanuatu.
When Cyclone Pam hit Vanuatu, the people of
the community packed into the church like sardines, and this is what saved their
lives as the building had only been completed two years earlier. The old church
was completely destroyed. Although Cyclone Pam did not destroy the main church
or school buildings, considerable damage has been done to out buildings and most
homes lost their roofs and suffered huge water damage. Most of the communities
possessions were either blown away or water damaged.
In
June/July this year, another delegation from the church will go to Vanuatu to
install computers and train the staff and students how to use them. other tasks
like painting, and assistance in the school with reading to students and
preparing meals to ease the burden on the teachers will also be key initiatives
of the trip.
Last
year funds were provided by the Wesley Castle Hill Vanuatu committee to pay for
the uniforms and school fees for 14 students in Vanuatu. With financial support
from Wesley, a group from Vanuatu came to Australia for the National Christian
Youth Convention in 2012 & 2014. One of the young men who came in 2012
decided to become a minister and we have paid for his training in Fiji. He is
now a graduate and is ministering in Port Vila.
The school is
the mission of the church, but all decisions on what is needed are made by the
people of Paama Seaside, not by the church here in Australia. The partnership
simply aims at partially meeting the needs of the people.
