1. Character Counts

Two very good talks.

Nathan Mellor has some advice for corporate America and how they treat their employees: less rules, more character. In this Talk, Nathan looks at companies whose people show up to work and know that their work is a part of who they are. Nathan Mellor is the president of Strata Leadership, LLC (Strata) based in Oklahoma City. Resources and programs offered through Strata are used in all 50 States and in over 25 Countries. Strata serves an audience of over 400000 individuals each month.

Excellent 18 minute video

God blesses each one of us with gifts. Unfortunately, even a good gift from a good source can be abused.  Ravi Zacharias takes a look at how talent without character is a dangerous combination.

2. Pakistani Christians told, 'Protest again and you will die'

Many in the Lahore area are living in shocking conditions following the violence there which saw about 200 Christian homes torched and two churches burned to the ground

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries Saturday, March 16, 2013

LAHORE, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- Outraged Pakistani Christians have taken to the streets of Lahore (and other cities in the country,) to protest against the terrible violence they have suffered following a blasphemy accusation against a young Christian.

The demonstrators denounced the burning of about 200 Christian homes and two churches by a frenzied Muslim mob of about 3,000, amidst claims spurred by allegations that a Christian man made remarks against the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

Some of the hundreds of protesters last Sunday threw stones at police, saying the government failed to adequately protect Christians, Lahore senior police official Rai Tahir.

"Tahir said video footage of the fires helped lead to the arrests of more than 150 attackers. He said charges of terrorism have been filed against the suspects," said a CNN report.

The violence that tore through Lahore's Badami Bagh community on Saturday, March 9, 2013, followed the arrest of Sawan Masih, a Christian in his 20s accused of blasphemy.

"But Masih's arrest wasn't enough to appease an angry mob of Muslims irate over the alleged crime," added CNN. "(The) mob wanted police to hand them over the alleged blasphemer, said Hafiz Majid, a senior police official in Badami Bagh.

3. A Crisis of Critical Thought

Ravi Zacharias International Ministries Interactive Youth Apologetics
We are facing a very real crisis of critical thought among today’s youth. Our secular culture increasingly favors a growing multiculturalism that affirms a uniform tolerance of all worldviews while simultaneously opposing a firm commitment to any one belief. Many young people believe that all religions are basically the same. Consequently, many young men and women cannot articulate their own faith.
Seeking to challenge these realities, the ASK curriculum aims to empower students with the critical tools necessary for understanding their own faith and for investigating and evaluating differing worldviews.

CLASS DISCUSSIONS – CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT TO ASK QUESTIONS
ASK was intentionally designed to be interactive. That means the group leader must introduce the session topic in class, help inspire conversations based on the questions provided, and use different multimedia tools (DVD videos, SMS polling, PowerPoint and Keynote presentations, online web forums) to create a dynamic learning atmosphere.
Why do we place so much emphasis on interaction? Why not just play a DVD for 45 minutes? In the book Soul Searching, Christian Smith’s observations gleaned from the National Study for Youth and Religion (NSYR) show:
• Religious educators need to work hard on articulation
• Youth are comfortable talking about God but not Jesus
• Teens need to practice talking about their faith
• Articulation fosters reality
The group leader is to help carry and focus the class conversations around the session topic. We want to help develop the student’s ability to think critically. We do not expect a group leader to have all of the answers. Actually, we expect a facilitator to learn with the class and model how to gracefully find answers when don’t know.
The Ask Curriculum

Unlike DVD curriculum where the video dominates classroom time and requires only fill-in-the-blank answers, ASK requires a group leader to inspire and encourage students to verbalize their beliefs. For a group leader, ASK demands a time commitment similar to preparing for an in-depth Bible study.
Hosted by Nathan Zacharias, speakers in this DVD series include Ravi Zacharias, John Lennox, Stuart McAllister, Andy Bannister, John Njoroge, and Jill Carattini.
ASK was built to reach students of high school age and up.

The interactive ASK curriculum is comprised of:

  • A four-DVD set containing 16 sessions in 4 modules – origin, meaning, morality, and destiny
  • An introductory video to start the class discussion and a concluding Q&A video with an RZIM speaker for each session
  • Exclusive web access for your class on www.rzimask.org containing facilitator and student content
  • A free ASK SMS text message service for in-class discussion and polling
  • An online and digital facilitator’s guide (downloadable from www.rzimask.org after registration)
  • Bonus material from RZIM CD and DVD messages for different sessions
  • Online question and answer videos from RZIM open forum events
  • Ongoing site enhancements with new content based on feedback from your group

4. Islamic Peace Conference report - Bill Muehlenberg

Since I have written several articles about the big Islamic Peace Conference in Melbourne, asking people to pray for it and engage in some spiritual warfare over it, it is appropriate that I now record the aftermath of the whole affair.
The short story is this: thanks to all your prayer and intercession, the whole thing seems to have been a real fizzer. The numbers were nowhere near what they anticipated, and they must have lost a bundle of money as a result. None of their big name overseas speakers showed up, and the whole thing must be leaving the organisers with a big headache...

5. Forty Days of Prayer & Fasting Concludes

Do do you now have more strategies for how you can be part of God’s transformation of your region or cultural sphere in our nation?

Week 6: God is Life - Giving! We overflow God’s LIFE to our world through loving relationships. 1John 4:7-21 We are fruitful because we remain connected to Jesus as we go; constantly infilling as we overflow LIFE to our neighbours and regions - beyond these 40 days.

Prayer and evangelism strategies used this week are based on A Simple Guide To Establishing A Local House Of Prayer by Roy Godwin from Ffald-y-Brenin. See Key Resources below.

Week 6: DAY 39 Saturday 23 March

Intention: We actively support others to LIVE fully – especially children and families at risk.

Scripture:
Psalm 10:16-18 The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.  You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.

James 1:27 Religion that our God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Worship: The Prayer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJkq-U7_8ZA

Reflection: Reflect back over the 40 days and where you go from here.

Hopefully you have a deeper understanding of the tenderness in God’s heart for us all; and greater sensitivity to what God is asking of you.

Hopefully, you are each cultivating deeper capacity – as you rest in God – to love LIFE and cherish the LIFE of others.

Hopefully you have chosen to live in alignment with God’s righteousness and justice because, as a natural consequence, this enables us to enjoy the abundant LIFE of God’s blessing.

Can you stand in a fresh commitment to what it means to be God’s blessing in our world?

Do you have more strategies for how you can be part of God’s transformation of your region or cultural sphere in our nation? Reflect on what LIFE giving changes you will maintain.

Are you much more aware of the needs of the most vulnerable children and families in your immediate neighbourhood and sphere of influence? We have the capacity to influence global poverty and need through prayer, financial support and by offering our skills.

Are there initiatives you will explore with others in your neighbourhood, small group, church, community or through a missional organisation?  Abide in Jesus so you can release our Father’s LIFE giving blessing – Jesus’ kingdom – to people everywhere.

Psalm 70:1 & 5 Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me. But as for me, I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; Lord, do not delay.

Have you added your prayer at www.100000prayersforlife.com?

Today’s Prayer Focus: We ask you to prompt us, Lord to new levels of LIFE support for families and children at risk.

Father,
We worship you as Yahweh-Shalom – the one who fulfils and makes whole.
Thank you for enabling us to hear what you are saying
And enabling us to see people as you do so we can speak your hope and vision into their lives.
Thank you for leading us to those you would have us release LIFE blessing and nurture to, Lord.
Thank you for showing us how we can serve so people flourish with LIFE.
Thank you for giving us your love for the people who need your LIFE and love most at this time
And for enabling us to be in the right place at the right time with the right words and actions.
Your timing is perfect and you know each heart intimately.

We pray blessings on the local churches and people of God who are ministering as wells of mercy in our communities. Lift them up and resource them, Father, and connect us in ways that enable greater efficiencies and diversification.

Help us pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
We need your Holy Spirit so we can pray and minister LIFE with your power, according to your will.
We pray for those who cry out for help to come quickly.
We pray for those who are unable to cry out for themselves – the unborn, those muted by disability and hopelessness.
We pray that, as we go, people who need LIFE will be healed in Jesus’ name and that those who are captive will be set free in Jesus’ name and that we will see those who are dead raised by the power that raised Christ.
We release LIFE breakthrough over death throughout Australia in Jesus’ name.
To your glory, God! Amen

We pray for the people we have listed. As God’s Spirit leads, invite these people to fellowship with you in an appropriate way – perhaps inviting them to church with you over Easter. Continue to be a good friend – conveying how much you love them
.

6. Iraq: Only 57 churches left in the entire country

There were 300 in 2003. But then, with Saddam Hussein gone, the efforts to impose Sharia began in earnest. "Christians, churches dwindling in Iraq since start of war 10 years ago," by Perry Chiaramonte for FoxNews.com, March 21
The head of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq says that the number of Christian houses of worship there has dwindled alarmingly in the decade since the U.S. invaded and ousted Saddam Hussein from power. There are just 57 Christian churches in the entire country, down from more than 300 as recently as 2003, Patriarch Louis Sako told Egyptian-based news agency MidEast Christian News. The churches that remain are frequent targets of Islamic extremists, who have driven nearly a million Christians out of the land, say human rights advocates.
“The last 10 years have been the worst for Iraqi Christians because they bore witness to the biggest exodus and migration in the history of Iraq,” William Warda, the head of the Hammurabi Human Rights Organization told the news agency.
Many Christians live in the provinces of Baghdad, Nineveh, and Kirkuk, and Dohuk and Erbil, which are both in the autonomous region of Kurdistan. Warda said some 1.4 million Christians lived in Iraq prior to Hussein's ouster. Under the democratically-elected government that now oversees the war-torn, but oil-rich nation, Islamic extremists have been able to operate more freely.
“More than two-thirds [of Christians] have emigrated,” Warda noted.
One byproduct of regime change in the Middle East, whether at the hand of the U.S. military and its allies or demonstrators in the streets, has been a decline in tolerance for other religions, say experts. Only one Catholic church remains in Afghanistan, and it must be heavily protected. In Egypt and Libya, where demonstrators overthrew dictators in recent years, Christians have come under heavy persecution, say concerned advocates....
The "experts" did not note, and may not know, that this intolerance is rooted in Islamic law, which mandates the subjugation of non-Muslims (cf. Qur'an 9:29). Christians who had enjoyed more or less equal rights in Saddam's Iraq, which did not enforce Islamic law, had to be shown their place. And they were.

7. Easter: unity essential for survival and witness

By Elizabeth Kendal
Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin (RLPB) 203
Special to ASSIST News Service Tuesday, March 26, 2013

A call to follow our Lord and pray for spiritual unity (John 17:20-26)

AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- Spiritual unity is not the same as unification. Believers will always interpret Scripture differently, observe different traditions and prefer different styles. Spiritual unity rises out of the recognition that all who are in Christ are one flock with Christ as Shepherd, one body with Christ as Head, one people filled with one Spirit and one family with God as Father.

Whilst spiritual unity may develop as a fruit of persecution, this is not automatically the case. If there has been a history of competition, conflict or suspicion between fellowships or denominations, then divisions may actually widen during persecution as groups long hostile towards each other compete for favoured status or limited resources in a desperate, fear-based struggle for survival.

Furthermore, an escalation in persecution may even serve to widen the divide between persecuted and free Christians. Paul experienced this during his second imprisonment in Rome when the churches of Asia deserted him (2 Timothy 1:15,16). The scene is repeated today, both locally and globally. Locally, free Christians might not want to risk their own security through association with the persecuted who may be regarded as criminals or targets. Globally, free Christians might not want to be burdened and challenged by the knowledge of Christian suffering. Onesiphorus should be our mo! del, for he was 'not ashamed' of Paul's chains.

On t he night he was betrayed, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane: 'I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.' (From John 17:20-26 ESV.) Yet as we have seen, despite spiritual unity being a spiritual reality (we are one) it is not automatically practised and persecution does not automatically produce it. The default position of human nature is self-interest and self-preservation. Unless we commit to following truly the model of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, then our innate disposition towards self-interest and self-preservation will always work to short-circuit our best intentions, leaving the Church divided against itself (Mark 3:24).

Today, from the Middle East west across North Africa; north through Syria into Iraq and Iran; and east through to Afgha! nistan and Pakistan, the Church is facing a trial unlike a nything that has been seen in our lifetime. The stage is being set for regional ethnic and sectarian blood-letting. It is shaping up to be a multi-dimensional conflagration from which local Christian minorities will struggle to survive. Meanwhile, a variety of anti-Christian ideological and totalitarian forces are flexing their muscles across Asia and making deep inroads into Africa and the West. We need to understand the times (Luke 12:54-56) and align with the will of the Father, the work of Christ and the movement of the Holy Spirit. We must practise the spiritual unity Christ prayed for in the garden some 2000 years ago, that the Church might fulfil her role as a sign to the world that the Gospel is true.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT --
  • the Holy Spirit will move powerfully through the hearts of all persecuted believers this Easter, to awaken those who are anxious and frightened to the spiritual unity they have w! ith their Christian neighbours because of their union in Christ.

  • believers will stand firm in faith together, the dross of fear, suspicion and self-interest burnt away, encouraging and assisting each other with selfless courage and generosity across ethnic and denominational lines.

  • the Holy Spirit will move powerfully through the hearts of all free and prosperous believers this Easter, that God's love may flow through their hearts, filling them with brotherly love, selfless courage and unreserved generosity so they will seek out and assist the persecuted, across ethnic and denominational lines.

  • the sacrificial love of God (as demonstrated through the cross) and the life-giving power of God (as demonstrated through the resurrection) will be displayed in and modelled by the Church as she rises supernaturally above self to give of self sacrificially and generously.
