Martin Place Amphitheatre, Sydney

Jesus, sentenced and beaten at Martin Place, carries his cross to the place of crucifixion. Witnessing this heart breaking and stirring journey are hundreds of people, stretching from Martin Place along Pitt Street as Jesus moves, stumbling and crying out.

The Good Friday Journey to the Cross procession is an unforgettable experience, bringing the Easter story to life in modern Australia. It is a signature event on Sydney’s Easter calendar, drawing interest not only from within Australia but internationally as one of the first major Christian public events held in the world on Good Friday.

The procession travels south to the Wesley Theatre where a special Good Friday service will be held.

“The journey of Christ to the cross is a stark reminder of his suffering but also his steadfast love for each of us,” the Superintendent of Wesley Mission the Rev Dr Keith Garner said. “As it was at the time of his crucifixion, onlookers are perplexed and curious as Christ carries his cross through the CBD to the relentless beat of the Roman drum.”

Media should assemble at Martin Place Amphitheatre at 1.45pm. The procession starts at 2.00pm and travels along Pitt Street, ending at Wesley Theatre, 220 Pitt Street at 2.30pm.
